Reading helps children’s development to get acquainted and be familiar with sounds, words, language and print that would stimulate their imagination and push them to go on reading and be successful in life.

According to Ontario (2003), the acquisition of language is natural, but the process of learning to read is not, reading must be taught. It is in reading that the children will be able to understand literal language and therefore communicate and interact with the world around.

Hence, the use of learning resources and instructional materials in reading contribute much in the reading ability of children.

Pursuant to the DepEd Memorandum 001, s.2024, DO. 13, S.2023 and any other related memorandum, the Southwest District of Butuan City Division continually improves its well-intentioned teachers, master teachers and school administrators in support of providing opportunities for those struggling learners especially in reading.

For struggling learners, Catch-Up Fridays offered a lifeline. Teachers prepared individualized learning plans, carefully and passionately guided the learners with undivided attention hence, they were able to delve deeper into challenging concepts without the pressure of keeping up with the rest of the class. Beyond academic gains, Catch-Up Fridays also nurtured a sense of community where they shared knowledge and ideas, interacted to problem-solving that fostered teamwork.

The activity started with a program facilitated by the different committees in charge.

Mr. Raymond T. Abuloc, the Principal of the host school, La Trinidad Integrated School gave his warm welcome address that created a truly welcoming atmosphere, that made the participants felt valued and excited.

Nancy O. Ranan, the District Reading Coordinator, clearly articulated the statement of purpose effectively and captured the essence of the activity, which motivated the participants to contribute meaningfully to its success.

Furthermore, Dr. Jonas H. Jomonong, the District Supervisor shared his inspiring message which ignited a renewed sense of purpose among the participants. His words fueled a collective determination to create dynamic and engaging learning environments. The message was a powerful catalyst, empowering educators to overcome challenges and embrace innovative teaching strategies, ultimately benefiting every learner in the district.

Then, the demonstration teaching follows on the “Reading Links Lesson” by the assigned demonstrators, Nancy O. Ranan from the elementary and Anna-May Salgado from the secondary that took place respectively in the different venues of the school.

Catch-Up Fridays is a program dedicated to providing additional academic support and enrichment to learners with various needs. Teachers are addressing these learning difficulties through targeted instruction and practice. Fostering teamwork and collaboration among educators are the key to expanding learners’ knowledge and skills beyond their regular contact time. A sense of profound satisfaction can then be felt by teachers as they witnessed the growth and development of their learners. ###
