At Butuan Central Elementary School, the operation of our school canteen plays a crucial role in not only addressing the nutritional needs of our pupils but also in supporting the daily expenses and maintenance of the school. With the school’s Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE) fund having limited allocation, the income generated by the canteen has become an invaluable resource.

Under the capable management of Mrs. Rosita L. Plaza, and supported by her diligent assistants Mrs. Joy Reyes, Mrs. Divina Lariosa, Mrs. Reynilda Macasero—all teachers—and Job Order assistant Mrs. Juvy Rendon, the canteen has been instrumental in sustaining various school activities and maintenance needs that the MOOE cannot cover.

Enhancing Student Nutrition and Learning

The primary mission of our school canteen, as mandated by DepEd Order No. 008, s. 2007, is to help eliminate malnutrition among pupils and to serve as a venue for developing desirable eating habits. The canteen offers a variety of nutritious meals and snacks, ensuring that our students receive the proper nourishment needed for their physical and mental development.

Moreover, the canteen serves as a practical laboratory for Home Economics, retail trade, and the incidental teaching of health and nutrition. Students gain hands-on experience in planning, purchasing, handling and storage, preparation, serving, and selling safe and nutritious meals. This educational component not only enhances their understanding of healthy eating but also equips them with valuable life skills.

Financial Transparency and Accountability

According to the guidelines, transparency and accountability in the reporting and accounting of the proceeds from the canteen operations are emphasized. This ensures that all funds generated are utilized effectively and efficiently. The canteen’s income is meticulously documented and reported, reflecting our commitment to financial integrity.

Supporting School Maintenance and Operations

The income from our canteen operations significantly contributes to covering daily school expenses and maintenance activities that are not sufficiently funded by the MOOE. This includes minor repairs, purchasing cleaning supplies, and other essential items needed to maintain a safe and conducive learning environment for our students.

For instance, when there are immediate needs for classroom repairs or when additional instructional materials are required, the canteen funds provide a swift and reliable source of support. This helps prevent disruptions in the learning process and ensures that our school facilities are always in top condition.

A Community Effort

The successful operation of our school canteen is a testament to the dedication and hard work of Mrs. Plaza and her team. Their commitment to serving the students goes beyond providing meals; they foster a sense of community and responsibility. The collaborative effort of the canteen staff, students, and the entire school community creates an atmosphere that supports both the academic and personal growth of our pupils.

In conclusion, the canteen at Butuan Central Elementary School is more than just a place where students purchase food. It is a vital component of our school’s ecosystem, contributing to the well-being of our students and the overall functioning of the school. As we continue to strive for excellence in education and student welfare, the canteen will remain an essential part of our strategy to create a nurturing and effective learning environment.
