Chiz in Top 3 of Laylo Senatorial Survey
Sorsogon Gov. Chiz Escudero, who is seeking a Senate return, remains one of the leading candidates according to the Laylo senatorial survey made available ahead of the start of the official campaign period for national elective positions on February 8.
Escudero, who served two full terms in the Senate, was preferred by 42 percent of 3,000 likely voters asked during Laylo’s national survey conducted from January 17 to 23, ranking him in 2nd to 3rd among the pre-listed senatorial candidates.
Preference for Escudero’s senatorial candidacy scored high in South Luzon/Bicol, his bailiwick, at 47 percent. In the Visayas, home to 13.2 million voters based on the poll body’s 2019 data, the former senator was also preferred by 47 percent of the respondents.
Escudero, meanwhile, was chosen by 42 percent of the respondents in Mindanao, which had a voting a population of 11.2 million during the 2019 mid-term elections.
As of December 2021, the Commission on Elections said at least 67.5 million Filipinos are eligible to cast their ballots in the May national elections, broken down as follows: 65.7 million domestic voters and 1.8 million overseas voters.
The veteran legislator, whose legislative agenda include the strengthening of local government units and help navigate the country’s post-pandemic recovery efforts, has consistently ranked high in various pre-election surveys by independent pollsters in the past.
Escudero’s Senate comeback bid has been endorsed by the tandems of Vice President Leni Robredo and Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan; Senator Ping Lacson and Senate President Tito Sotto; and Senator Manny Pacquiao and Representative Lito Atienza, who are all running for president and vice president, respectively.
Recently, mayors from Calabarzon (Calamba, Laguna, Batangas and Quezon) and Eastern Samar who belong to the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) said they are backing Escudero’s reelection to the Senate. #
