As mandated by the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC), Amparo Central Elementary School (ACES) conducted a “Nationwide Earthquake Drill” twice a year. It is a practice by all the departments especially the Department of Education where children are the most concerned ones. ACES was just one amongst the many schools in the Division of Butuan City which actively participated in the said event. It aims to master the drill, familiarize the evacuation area location and to be able to minimize the casualties in —- the occurrence of an earthquake. It promotes awareness and readiness of each one of us to whatever tragedy might happen.
It was a smooth activity, though it was already made a practice, but the children were still very eager to participate. They didn’t even show any funny faces at all. They acted as if they were really in the situation.
There were some children who acted as the casualties and were immediately rescued by volunteer rescuers and brought the victim to the center of the ground away from anything that might fall.
Teachers as medics were also very ready in attending the casualties and treated the victims using their first aid kit, cleaning wounds and applying bandages to the victims’ affected area.
We just hope that even we are trained and practice a lot, in times of disaster especially earthquake, we can save not only ourselves but also our families and others as well. ###
