President Rodrigo Duterte said on Tuesday that he prayed that Sen. Manny Pacquiao wins his boxing match with Jessie Vargas, and that the victory should come via knockout during the early rounds.
“Dapat knockout, at sana mas madalian. Kasi if it goes beyond the seventh, eighth [round] pagod na yan,” Duterte explained, while admitting he was in no way a boxing expert.
Nevertheless, Duterte added, all Manny had to do was connect with a punch and the fight would be over. “Kung masapaol ni Manny yan, knockdown yan. Sigurado,” he declared.
“Hindi pa siya champion, but alam ko na he had that miracle punch,” Duterte added, remembering how Pacquiao would thrash sparring partners during the days when he was an unknown fighter. “Talagang malakas. It’s a god-given gift.”
The president also said that he always prayed for Pacquiao, recounting how the boxer always had fight-tickets reserved for him.
Duterte was never able to make use of the gifts, and all he could really offer in return for the generosity was prayers. — DVM, GMA News
